A transistor is an analog/digital electronic switch.
NPN-transistors reacts to positive and giving negative, while PNP-transistors reacts to negative and giving positive.
Transistors is widely used to convert from one voltage to another, and to invert between plus and minus when needed.
Transistors are also used as amplifiers, regulating voltage from a power supply by another signal.
Multiple transistors used together with resistors and diodes is used for various basic electronic functions.

B: Base (signal)
C: Collector (output power)
E: Emitter (input power)

NPN-transistor's emitter-pin is connected to ground.
Then a low positive voltage through a resistor R on the base-pin controls the amount of ground on the collector-pin.

PNP-transistor's emitter-pin is connected to positive voltage.
Then ground through a resistor R on the base-pin controls the amount of positive voltage on the collector-pin.

Optionally on both types of transistors (NPN/PNP) a pull-down-resistor R2 can be used,
to ensure the transistor if fully pulled down, when no signal on the base-pin.
